A Girl, a Bike, a Goal: Coney Island!

My summer is coming to an end in a few short days, but before that happens I simply had to cross 1 more thing off my 27 @ 27 list biking to Coney Island!

Thinking that Coney Island was going to be battered by Hurricane Irene (it was), I made use of the last calm day before the storm and hopped on the Blue Beauty for a Brooklyn-bound adventure.

Can you believe that the Blue Beauty has been to New Jersey but has never crossed the bridge to Brooklyn? Well not any more!

bikebeach

It was just under 15 miles to get there – through lower Manhattan, over the Brooklyn Bridge, through Prospect Park, and along the Ocean Parkway greenway.

When I arrived, sweaty and hungry, I treated myself to lunch at a Coney Island landmark!

nathans
Mmmmm. Cheese fries.

I’ve lived in NYC for over 6 years, but this was only my 3rd trip to Coney Island. I should probably go more often because I love it!  Strolling along the boardwalk past the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone, watching the waves come in an out, and hearing the sound of bells from the games a kids try to win prizes.

wheel
Oh, and I love boardwalk food.

ice

I had this cherry Italian Ice shortly before getting back on my bike, figuring a little sugar would give me a boost on the ride home…and because it was delicious.

16 miles later (because I got lost for a moment in Brooklyn) I was home, my 31 mile round trip adventure to Coney Island complete. It was my longest bike ride of the year, and other than a little pain in my knee from trying to stand as I went up hills, I felt great.

Oh and I have a sweet bike shorts tan to show for it now. :)

Summer is almost over! What how are you going to make use of these last summery days?

Mission Summer: Accomplished

Two things say “summer” to me like no other: ice cream & beaches.  And while I eat more than my fair share of fro yo on a regular basis, I save the real deal stuff for when I really want to treat myself.

And in NYC, there is one way really special way to treat yourself to ice cream…

THE BIG GAY ICE CREAM TRUCK!

truck

I’ve been following these guys on twitter for ages (and I’m pretty sure they’re my soul mates because they seem to love unicorns, sparkles, and The Golden Girls as much as I do) but it took me until a couple weeks ago to actually get myself to the truck.

Once I was there, I had zero doubt about what I needed to try.  It’s the treat that’s had me drooling in anticipation for months (and it was just featured on Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate)…

THE SALTY PIMP!

saltypimp

What is this magical concoction?  It’s vanilla soft serve, injected with the truck’s homemade dulce de leche, sprinkled with coarse grains of sea salt, and then dipped into a spiced chocolate shell.

This is my oh-my-god-it’s-so-amazing face.

steff_icecream

Heavenly.  Fo’ realz.

Know what else is heavenly and screams of summer?

THE BEACH!!

beach

It was my other mission for the season to make it to a local beach at least once, so yesterday when Steve had a surprise day off and the weather was glorious we hopped on the LIRR out to Long Beach!

It was actually a little chilly when the sun hid behind the clouds and the water was C-O-L-D…oh and there was that little earthquake (um, what?) that greeted us shortly after our arrival…but it was still a glorious way to spend a summer day.

steffbeach

Happy beach face!!

And with that, 2 of my major goals for the summer have been completed.  And just in time since my summer psuedo vacation ends in a week.  Which brings me to…

OTHER NEWS!

Things are starting to get really crazy really fast in steff-land.  School obligations & some new challenges (Professor Steff over here!) are ramping up at warp speed and I just don’t know if I can handle blogging (or working out, or seeing friends, or breathing) as regularly as I have been & would like too.  Thus, I am strongly considering taking a blog hiatus for a month or two.  I think I just need a break to see how the blog is going to fit into my new schedule…or if it even can.  But I am going to think it over for the next few days and make some sort of official announcement next week.

Just wanted to give ya’ll a heads up.

You have anything left on your summer fun to-do list?

Fancy Gym Envy

My post-triathlon fitness life has been all about having fun and trying new things.  I’ve still be biking a bunch, but I haven’t hit the pool at all (mostly because it is SO crowded in the summer) and have only run once since the tri.

Instead of my previous routine (bike, run, swim, bike, run, yoga, repeat) I’ve  been spicing things up by venturing into new fitness territory.  Here’s how:

  • I’ve tried 2 new fitness class, both dance related:  Nia & Zumba.  I’ve done each twice so far, and strangely I loved each one the first time, but wasn’t so into it at class 2.  Maybe it was just the novelty of it I loved?  I guess I’ll find out this weekend when I go for Zumba class #3.
  • I’m cheating on my gym.  I won a 1 month pass to Pure Yoga in a raffle a few months ago and it had just been sitting on my desk waiting for triathlon training to be over.  Also I signed up for a free 3-day trial membership for my local Equinox gym online.  Just for the hell of it.

I’ve been loving the excitement of stepping out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things.  But there has been one major downside to this adventure…

I find myself battling a major case of FANCY GYM ENVY!

For those of you who don’t know Pure Yoga (I didn’t until recently)…it’s an uber luxurious, members only yoga studio with locations on the Upper East and Upper West sides.

pure

I was SO excited when I won a month pass to Pure in my choir‘s raffle in May.  Not just because free yoga classes = awesomeness, but because they have Anusara classes on their schedule!

I fell head over heals in love with Anusara yoga a few years ago, but haven’t been taken a class since I left Crunch in October.  There are some Anusara studios in the city, of course, but the drop in rates are much higher than the $5 I pay for Vinyasa classes.

The classes at Pure are uh-maz-ing.  The teachers are knowledgeable, the facilities are immaculate, the classes are small and uncrowded, and they even provide the mats!  But to make something like Pure worth it, yoga would have to pretty much be the only activity someone does!  Plus it’s totally out of the way for me to go to there, but I’m “on vacation” right now and don’t mind trekking to the Upper West Side to make use of my free month pass.

Now on the the real source of my gym envy.  Equinox.

equinox

Ohhh Equinox.  It’s just so chic and glamorous (yes, I’m talking about a gym).

The machines are all new & and in good working order.  The floor to ceiling windows flood the gym with sunlight.  The neutral colored decor, comfortable seating areas, and lush greenery made it feel more like I was at a spa than a gym.  I didn’t feel grimy after walking through the locker room there, and their pool is not filled with screaming children.  Oh and there’s a juice bar!  And it is the closest gym to my apartment.  AND, perhaps most importantly, the spin classes don’t suck!  After pretty much giving up my beloved spin classes when I switched to the YMCA last year because the teachers there are terrible, taking a kickass class at Equinox was like handing drugs to an addict.  I.JUST.WANT.MORE.NOW!

But there is simply no way Equinox is possibly worth how much they charge for it.  It’s more than double the YMCA rates and just about double my old Crunch rate.  It’s a luxury gym, I get it, but it’s still just a gym!  So I’ll just think of my few days at Equinox as a lovely little fitness vacation.  Unless someone from Equinox happens to be reading this and wants to give me a free membership.  Anyone?  Hellooooo?

But for now, it’s back to the good ol’ YMCA.  Envy be damned!

5-ymca

Do you belong to a fancy shmancy gym?  Would you ever want to?

Awesome Places in NYC: Governors Island

It’s been ages since I’ve done one of my Awesome Places posts.  Hmm…I wonder if that means I’ve been hanging out in lots of lame places lately.  Well not any more!! Because this weekend Steve & I made our first ever trip to Governors Island!

1ferry

Yesterday was our 6 year anniversary, and we are both pretty poor right now so instead of exchanging gifts we decided to just spend the day together doing something new.  So around lunch time we hopped on the 1 train down to South Ferry and caught the free boat over to Governors Island!

Governors Island is a tiny little piece of land between Manhattan and Brooklyn.  The trip there was short and provided a new perspective on the downtown Manhattan skyline & the nice view of the bridges.

3bridges

Governors Island was home to military troops and forts dating back to the Revolutionary War, and remained home to military personal until 1996.  Since then it has been turned into a National Monument and has been slowly opened to the public.  The island is now a beacon concerts, parties, art exhibitions, bars, restaurants, and all sorts of merriment.

We began our afternoon at Water Taxi Beach.  It’s basically a man-made white sand beach (complete with fake palm trees) with gorgeous views of NYC and Jersey.

5beach

We had some lunch and walked around barefoot in the sand.  It was almost not at all like we were back in Puerto Rico…but still lovely.

After lunch we strolled around the island with no real purpose in mind.  It’s a pretty surreal scene…all of the abandoned houses, lovely lawns, and sidewalks set up just like they were when people lived there…only now most of them are empty and the others have been converted into shops.  It’s like a strange suburbia frozen in time.

7house

Steve and I found a quiet, empty porch on one of these abandoned houses and sat down for a game of (our favorite!) Bananagrams!

8bananagrams

Most of the afternoon was spent just strolling around the island taking in the sites — people taking trapeze lessons, families and couples on bicycles (and bicycles built for two…or even four!) casually riding around the island, and the amazing Jazz Age Lawn Party!

6jazz

We had seen ton of stunning men and women dressed in 1920s style clothing on the ferry and had wondered what it was all about.  When stumbled upon Colonel’s Row on the island our questions were quickly answered.  Apparently 2 weekends each summer, the big lawn on the island is transformed into Jazz Era time warp, complete with people doing the Charleston, a live jazz orchestra, food and beverages of the day and people dressed in amazing vintage styles.  I couldn’t get good pictures of it from the outside, so you can check out great photos here.  The next party is in August…I realllllly want to go back for it!

That pretty much concluded our trip to the island.  If you’re in the NYC area and haven’t been, I highly recommend it.  It’s FREE!!

After we got back from Governors Island, Steve spent the remainder of our anniversary eating dinner at one of our favorite Italian Restaurants in the neighborhood, and sitting out the couch watching Weeds on Netflix and drinking some wine (and eating dessert!)

9dessert

And of course viewing our complimentary anniversary fireworks!  Thanks, NYC.

11fireworks

They were actually fireworks for the Gay Pride Parade…but we watched then from right outside our building and pretended they were just for us.

Governors Island, dinner, wine, cheesecake, fireworks.  If you ask me that was a beautiful way to celebrate 6 years with my wonderful partner.

The Garden Party – Eat Your Pride Out!!

Monday night, Pier 54 in on the west side of Manhattan was transformed into a foodie paradise — little white tents filled with offerings from dozens of NYC restaurants, food trucks lining the sides of the pier, free drinks, music, celebrities.  What could be better for this food-loving gal who lives just a few blocks away?  How about a foodie paradise for a good cause!

treatstrucks

Done and done! Because Monday night’s event was Garden Party 28 – the 28th annual food-fest benefit for NYC’s LGBT Community Center!

Such events are normally reserved for people with a little more green lining their pockets than Steve and I…but we got lucky.  You see, my good friend Erica is on The LGBT Center’s Young Leaders Council and they had their own fundraiser party last week.  At that party I bought a raffle ticket and crossed my fingers in hopes of winning tickets to The Garden Party.

But when the night was over and the winners announced, my one little ticket had come up short.  But just a few minutes after I left the party Erica texted…her sister, who had already bought tickets to the party, won them in the raffle!  And just like that they were mine!  Woohoo!

Monday was such a beautiful night to be walking along the pier noshing on whatever caught our fancy…

taco

…like this beautiful lamb taco that Steve enjoyed.

The best dishes, like Brick Lane Curry Houses’s Paneer Tikka Masala, could be easily spotted my gauging the length of the line outside their tent.  But every time I started to feel impatient I just reminded myself that so many people at the event translated into lots of money raised by the LGBT Center!

rickshaw

I’m almost thankful that gluten free offerings were a bit scarce at the event because even with my limited options the choices were overwhelming.  One of my favorite dishes of the night was this amazing crabmeat arepa from North Square Restaurant.

arepa

Another favorite was the porcini and truffle risotto from Radicchio Pasta & Risotto Co.

There were a few stands of delectable Indian food (my fave) including Dawat, Tulsi, and of course Brick Lane Curry House.  Tulsi’s sweet potato chaat was another one of the highlights of my food-filled evening.

spices

My friend Leeann of The Oyster Blog had only very minor experiences with Indian food before The Garden Party…but by the end of the night she was officially converted.

As we wandered the pier eating and drinking, celebrities and politicians took the the stage to usher in Pride Week and remind NYers just how close we are to passing gay marriage in the state.  Inspiring…but frustrating.  C’mon New York.  Let’s just do this thing!

The crowds were thick, especially closer to the stage, and a few stands were out of food by the time I made my way to them.  So unfortunately I left without sampling the oysters from Rayuela or the seared tuna from En Japanese Brasserie.

Where I really went overboard was in the sweets department.

marshmallows

I don’t often eat large quantities of sugar but the dessert offerings at the event were just too exciting to pass up.  I tried some fancy shamncy homemade marshmallows from Mitchamllows, gelato from La Cremeria, and 2 different kinds of rice crispy treat from The Treats Truck!

ricekrispie

We left just as the sun was setting over the pier.  The little white tents were illuminated brightly against the darkening sky as we walked towards home…with a full belly (and a bit of a sugar headache).

fence

I’m so happy I was able to make it to Garden Party 28 and am hoping I get to attend this fantastic event again next year!

Happy Pride, everyone!!

Happy News, Happy Day, Happy Steff

Heeeeyyyy people!  Guess what?

happysteff

Because after 9 days of next to no physical activity I have gotten the official ok from my doctor to go back to some light running and biking!  Wooohooo!

It seems that the piriformis spasm has finally abated and the resultant sciatica has disappeared!  But let me just tell you folks, piriformis syndrome is NO JOKE.  I was limping like a gun shot victim and couldn’t even wiggle my way into child’s pose for several days!   Ugh.  I even ended up in a sobbing, screaming pile of self pity and pain on the floor once or twice while trying to stretch.  So take care of those backsides, peeps.  Strengthen those hips and stretch those buns.  Lesson learned.

Being nearly immobile had taken a serious toll on my mental health over the past week, so yesterday in appreciation of new ability to walk without pain Steve and I headed up to explore the recently opened phase 2 of The Highline!

3highline

For those of you not familiar with it, The Highline is an elevated park running along a portion of Manhattan’s west side.  It begins right near our apartment and until last week ran up to 20th street…now it is opened all the way to 30th!

We picked up some lunch at Chelsea Market and basked in the sunshine at a table stories above 10th Ave while we ate.

1sushi

I had some gorgeous sushi, sashimi and seaweed salad from Lobster Place and Steve had a sandwich and sweet potato fries (I snagged a few) from Friedman’s Lunch.

After lunch, we strolled through the park, admiring the scenery and enjoying the perfect weather.

2flower

While exploring the new section of The Highline, Steve and I noticed that a surprising percentage of people passing us were eating popsicles, and soon we found out why…a gourmet popsicle cart!  We could not resist a cold, sweet treat on a warm sunny afternoon.

We both decided on chili mango flavor.  Mmmmm.

5pop

We walked back home and while Steve was killing Nazis…or aliens…or something on x-box I headed over to Paragon Sports to pick up a pair of new running shoes (doctor’s orders)!  ;)

After chatting with a salesman, taking a spin on the treadmill for gait analysis, and trying out a few pairs I settled on this pair of Aisics GT 2160s.

7shoes

It was a hard decision but I think these shoes will serve me well…at least I hope they well.  Once I christen them with a run, I’ll let you know.

I finished my afternoon with a trip to Whole Foods and then I came home and cooked myself a fabulous dinner inspired by the beautiful weather and our recent trip to Puerto Rico — spice rubbed shrimp with pineapple salsa, spiced sweet potato mash & garlic ginger green beans.

dinner2

I’ll have the recipe up for y’all tomorrow.

There’s seriously nothing like some good news, good weather, and good food to do wonders for a gal’s mood.  I am soooo looking forward to easing my way back into training, but I am going to attempt to train in a more compassionate way from now on.  I will NOT be taking my mobility for granted any time soon!

Vacation Sensation – Part 2 – Vieques

If you missed yesterdays post about the San Juan segment of my fabulous Puerto Rican vacation…you can check it out here.  Because now…it’s on to Vieques!

In case you’re unfamiliar with it (as I was until recently), Vieques is a little island about 8 miles from the main island of Puerto Rico.  Until 2003 most of the island was controlled by the US Navy, so it is fairly undeveloped at this point.  The population of the island is only about 10,000 people and while one large resort has recently come to the island most of it is untouched beaches, wildlife preserve, 2 small towns and a handful of guesthouses.

Vieques can be accessed from Puerto Rico either via a ferry from Fajardo or a speedy ride in a teeny tiny plane from San Juan.  We opted for the second option, although we definitely were not prepared for just how tiny the plane would be!

75tinyplane

It only seated 6 people!!

The first thing that we did on Vieques after we picked up our rental car and checked into the guest house was go rent some snorkeling equipment.  There was a dilapidated old pier a short walk from our guest house that we were told was home to some cool fish.  And it certainly did not disappoint!  It felt like swimming in someone’s fancy salt water aquarium!  Steve stayed in the water all afternoon while I got out and did some photography.

84snorkysteve

That night we wandered around The Malecon, aka the main drag in the tiny town of Esperanza where we were staying, had some dinner, and spent the night relaxing in our guest house Esperanza Inn.

89esperanzainn

From the roof deck at the guest house the stars were among the best I’d ever seen in my life.  We sat up there watching the sky for a good chunk of the evening.  We also got a little relief from our kitty withdrawal by playing and snuggling with some of the dozen cats that call Esperanza Inn their home.

99kittyyawm

99sleepy

It’s a wonder none of them just happened to find their way into our luggage at the end of the trip.  ;)

The next morning after breakfast we set out in our rented Jeep to one of the island’s many practically deserted beaches.  Since there are so few people and so many beaches on Vieques you can literally just drive along the coast on little dirt roads until you find one that suits you.

Just be careful not to run into any of the 20,000 horses that call the island their home.  Yes.  20,000.  That is double the number of people on the island!

97horses

After a bit of driving down the bumpy roads Steve and I ended up at Red Beach, another highly recommended snorkeling spot.

91redbeach

There were maybe twenty other people dotted a long the sand…and we could have found a beach with even fewer people if we’d wanted to.  But Red Beach delivered the excellent snorkeling promised and honestly, having a few other people around is nice sometimes.  Especially when they offer to take a picture for you!

255098_685497864936_31501472_35903804_421182_n

After our fill of sun we headed back to Esperanza for a late lunch of fried plantain fritters and mahi mahi (for me) and got ready for the #1 thing that brought us to Vieques in the first place — kayaking in the bioluminescent bay.

Bioluminescence occurs when tiny microorganisms living in water emit their own light when touched or disturbed by motion.  This incredible phenomenon occurs in a handful of places on this crazy planet of ours…but Mosquito Bay in Vieques has the highest concentration of bioluminescent microorganisms in the world…and therefore the brightest glow.

When we met up with our kayaking tour group we were ridiculously excited but also a tad skeptical.  Would it be as amazing as we’ve heard it is?

99kayakers

The answer?  Yes.  The bioluminescent bay in Vieques is one of the most mind-bending and unforgettable things I have experienced in my life.

We paddled out into the bay while the sun was setting, a lightening storm off in the distance to entertain us while we waited for darkness.  Then as this sky became black, I could see a little glitter to the water as I dragged my hand through it.  Then over the next 10 minutes as the darkness became complete the glitter turned into a bright aqua glow.  We hopped out of our kayaks and swam around in the bay, the water lighting up around our bodies.  I lifted my forearm out of the water and could see the glowing water drip from my skin.  I hadn’t seen anything like it save for special effects in SciFi movies!

Unfortunately, photographing the phenomenon is nearly impossible…so I’ve snagged a few pictures from another source just to give you an idea of what it looked like.

biobay2

biobay1

It’s really that bright.  And truly that surreal.

As we kayaked back to the shore I saw what looked like a big bolt of blue lightning shoot past us in the water.  It took me a minute to realize it had actually been a fish, creating a trail of bioluminescent magic behind him as he swam.

So.Freaking.Cool!

The next day was our last day of vacation.  Coming down off the high of the biobay (and scratching the over 40 mosquito bites we each received while kayaking) we decided to venture up to the north side of the island and check out the other town – Isabel Segundo.

We walked along a truly deserted beach…

103beach

…did some shopping, and returned our rental car.  The highlight of Isabel Segundo?  I purchased what was, without a doubt, the most delicious mango I have ever eaten…picked from one of the many mango trees on this island.  This is some seriously amazing fruit I’m talking about.  If we hadn’t been to the biobay the night before that mango would be my favorite vacation memory.

113mango

That afternoon we decided to return to the pier we had snorkeled at before.  We spent our last few sunny hours in Puerto Rico swimming with the fish and I even got in a little back-bending yoga on the sand!

108wheel

107beachdancer

For our last night of vacation, Steve and I each enjoyed a rum cocktail as the sun began to set at one of the little bars in Esperanza and enjoyed a lovely seafood dinner.  We also met a little lizard friend on our way there.

123lizardbest

The next morning we arose bright and early and headed back home.  Le sigh.

This vacation was so close to perfection.  I didn’t do an once of academic work.  I worked out ZERO times (although we were certainly quite active).   I enjoyed food & drink that don’t normally have much of a place in my life — fried plantains, sugar laden girly cocktails.  We did memorable things, I took a ton of photos, and just tried to have the best time I possibly could.

I knew real life would be waiting for me when I returned…and it was…of course.  But I am reaturning to that real life a bit happier, a little tanner, and oh so relaxed.

Vacation Sensation – Part 1 – San Juan

Why hello there, everybody.  It’s been over a week since I’ve ventured into blogland and I almost feel like a child biking without training wheels for the first time.  What do I write about here?  People actually read these ramblings?  Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it once again.

To get me back in the swing of  blogging (and to torture you all a bit) I am going to begin with tales of sun, sand, and pina coladas…a two-part recap of my vacation.

Part 1 – San Juan, Puerto Rico

Last Saturday evening, Steve and I arrived in sunny, humid San Juan after a quick flight from grey, rain soaked NYC.  We checked into our hotel, the San Juan Sheraton Condado and ventured up to our room on the 19th floor.   The room had a balcony and the view was simply stunning.

6view

By the time we got settled in the room it was dinner time.  So we wandered down to the hotel’s Caribbean restaurant (since I refused the other alternative – Italian.  In Puerto Rico?  No thanks!).  At dinner, I fell in love.  With a fish.  Be expecting my new favorite, grouper, to make an appearance in a vacation inspired recipe soon because holy amazingness it was yummy!

After dinner that first night we sipped mojitos while a salsa band played in the lobby bar, played some video poker in the casino, and took a late night dip in the hotel pool followed by a soak in the hot tub.

The next morning we woke up, slapped on our swimsuits and headed out to the beach.  As opposed to my usual unshakable uncomfortability in a swim suit, my rocking new retro ensemble had me excited to get out there on the sand and strut my stuff!

12steffbeach

The water was bathtub warm, the seas were fairly calm and the beach was relatively quiet.  I spent the morning alternately swimming, doing some photography, and relaxing in the sand with a book of Kurt Vonnegut short stories.  Heavenly.

11wavecrash

After a couple hours of fun in the sun, I got changed and hopped a cab into Old San Juan to do some sight seeing.  Steve stayed behind to perfect is body surfing technique in the ocean and make sure he got sufficiently sunburned.  ;)

Old San Juan was beautiful.  I remembered the bright colors and charming architecture from when I visited Puerto Rico when I was in Junior High, but it was nice to come back as an adult and wander the streets at my leisure.

44oldsj

An impressive thunderstorm was rolling in as I made my way up to the fort.  While I did not appreciate getting rained on without an umbrella, I welcomed the drama the weather added to my photography at the fort.

40stormwall
42stormwall

After I was sufficiently damp and tired of walking I took a cab back to the hotel.  From our balcony I was greeted by a gorgeous post-storm rainbow!

47rainbow

When it was time for dinner Steve & I decided to try a little Spanish restaurant across the street from our hotel.  While the food was pretty underwhelming, I did get my hands on a pina colada.  A must while in Puerto Rico, right?

48steffpina

The rest of that night was spent relaxing, watching some TV, and enjoying another late night swim in the pool.

The next morning after breakfast we picked up a rental car and headed to Puerto Rico’s rainforest — El Yunque.

A major road goes right through the forest so we drove around a bit before deciding to stop and do some hiking.  I was struck by how much cooler the air was in the jungle and the green lushness was sensational.

54tree

The trail we chose ended at the beautiful La Mina waterfall.  Despite the frigid temperature of the water, Steve and I stripped down to our swimsuits and hopped in.  After the sweat-inducing walk through the jungle it felt amazing!

68uswaterfall

We played around in the waterfall for a while, then, after a soggy hike back to where we had left the car and the drive back to the hotel, we decided to hang out at the hotel pool for a while before dinner.  At our hotel, the pool was always more crowded than the beach.  Yet, it was such an inviting little oasis that I was lured to it just like everyone else.

5pool

That was our last night in San Juan.  We finished the evening with a delicious dinner at an authentic Caribbean place down the street from our hotel, a little more video poker in the casino, and walk (or dash) through a downpour to get ice cream.

The next morning we headed back to the airport to venture over to the tiny island of Vieques.  But that, my friends, is Part 2 of the story!  And you’ll just have to check back tomorrow to hear more.

Steff is Missing in Action

Well I may not actually be missing but I am away from my blog temporarily.

GoneFishin[1]

Because…I am ON VACATION!!  Yep.  This will likely be my only post of the week because last evening Steve & I arrived in lovely Puerto Rico and will be here for the rest of the week.  Woohoo!

I’ll be providing you pictures and highlights from the trip once I’m back in NYC, but for now I want to share with you a little bit about what I did to prepare for our getaway…to get in the vacation mindset.

I’m sure that getting into the right mental space for vacation is not a challenge for some of you.  But to me, a chronic overthinker and OCD work-a-holic, it can be hard to switch my mind into relaxation mode.  So here are some of the steps I took:

Practice vacation-centric self care.  I was way overdo for a mani-pedi, so right before we left for our trip I got my nails done in this fantastic tropical shade of coral rather than one of my usual dark hues.

jenganails

Jenga seems to approve of the color.  ;)

Set work/technology limits for the trip. My hotel does not have free wifi and I vow that today is the only day I am paying for it.  That means no responding to emails.  No checking the status of my research online.  None of that.  I can still get calls and texts so if anyone needs to reach me urgently they can.  Other than that I am off limits.

Brighten up! As I mentioned in regards to my manicure, dark colors are my typical go-to.  So are solids.  But when I saw a brightly colored, patterned dress on the sale rack at one of my favorite stores that just seamed to scream “VACATION!”…I decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone a little bit.

dress

Encourage relaxation…whatever that means for you.  My suitcase is filled with entertaining fiction to read and a giant book of crossword puzzles — because that’s how I like to relax.  The heavy, academic stuff I want to read will still be there waiting for me next week.  No need to worry about it now.  And I didn’t even pack my running shoes.  GASP!  I’m giving my body a break as well as my mind.  :)

Dress the part! In addition to adding some color to my nails and my wardrobe, in preparation for this trip I bought myself a new bathing suit for the first time in about 6 years.  I don’t feel comfortable in bikinis and most one pieces are so ugly…but I’d had my eye on this adorable vintage inspired number for a year now.  Going to the Caribbean finally gave me the excuse to get it!

suit

Wow.  I can’t believe I just posted a picture of myself in a bathing suit on the internet.   ::blushes::

To top off my vintage bathing beauty look I picked up a big floppy hat and some cat-eye shades.  Meeeeow!

withhat2

Be prepare to be unprepared. Going with the flow is not my strong suit.  I like to plan every detail and organize everything.  Steve is the opposite.  He’s much more of a relaxed, spontaneous person.  My vacation mission is one of compromise — to plan to a certain extent but be as flexible as I can within those plans, and to be able to let them go when I need to.  Go with the flow, Steff.  Just go with the flow.

So that’s my plan for a sensational vacation.  Next week I’ll let you know how it worked out.  Have a great week everyone!!

The Vacation Rollercoaster

One week ago I had just returned from my mini-vacation in lovely Tucson, Arizona.

Although I was only away for 3 days it took me nearly a week to feel back to normal at home in NYC.  I’ve experienced this before.  I call it the vacation rollercoaster.

The vacation rollercoaster is: weeks (sometime months) of build up and anticipation is followed by a week (or less) of fun adventures.  Then there is the inevitable return to reality and, in this case, a post-vacation depression.

Not that my reality is all that bad, honestly I really love my life in NYC…but vacation is an escape from the mundane.  It is filled with new sights and experiences…and it can be hard to let that go (especially when your vacations are as few and far between as mine).

My 3 days in Arizona were like a wonderful stimulation overload for all of my senses.

The scenery was incredibly beautiful and unfamiliar to me.  The sky was so blue.  The flora so unique.  The whole vibe of the southwest was so different from what I am used to.

I felt really alive and energized in the desert.  Being a heat-hating-water-lover I was not expecting to feel this way.  But something about being there just felt so good and so right to me.

I got to spend a ton of time with one of my favorite women in the world — my dear friend Vanessa who I don’t get to see nearly enough (because she lives in Arizona…duh).

I also got to know a bunch of Vanessa’s Arizona friends all of whom were truly wonderful people who made the trip all the more special.

We spent the entire time I was there doing things I love.  The days were spent hiking and adventuring…

…doing some shopping at an artsy downtown street fair, and eating amazing food like Mexican, sushi, gelato, and of course street fair food like this awesome (Bluth-esque) frozen banana.

And there were goats!  One of whom tried to eat my pants.  Literally.   Not the highlight of the trip, certainly.  But memorable.  ;)

Our nights were filled with the kind of funky bars I love (including one cowboy bar…yeeeehaw!) and of course some Arizona style karaoke…in the bar of a Best Western motel.  It was way more awesome than that sounds.

I hardly got any sleep while I was there (a combination of the time difference, excitement of the trip, and my general insomnia made it impossible)…but that didn’t matter.  The sun and the dry heat gave me enough energy to enjoy every moment of my time away.

Did I mention it was hot?  Hot AND sunny?  And I loved it?  So strange.

It’s easy to see why, after a few days spent like that, a return to normal life could be a bit depressing.  The cloudy gray skies of NYC…fighting the throngs at Penn Station…long trips on the LIRR…classes…readings…papers…research…IRB… laundry….cleaning etc.  It’s all not nearly as exciting as hiking, swimming, dancing, eating, drinking, singing, exploring and adventuring.  But that’s why life is life, right?  And that is why vacation is something to be treasured, remembered and though of often.

And, without a doubt, I will be doing a lot of fond thinking about my 3 day mini vacation in Tucson, Arizona.
